878 Door de erfenis van zijn vader een van de rijkste edelen van Opper-Bourgondië. Graaf van Bourgondië en Auxerre, leke-abt van St Maurice en Valais.
888 Gekozen tot koning waarmee het zelfstandige Opper-Bourgondië ontstaat. Na zijn kroning bezet hij grote delen van Opper-Lotharingen en de Elzas in een poging om koning van Bourgondië te worden en wordt zelfs in 6 888 tot koning gekroond in Toul. Moet zijn pogingen opgeven in ruil voor de erkenning van zijn koningschap door Arnulf van Duitsland, op de rijksdag van Regensburg 10 888.
De relatie met Arnulf blijft vijandig tot 894 en hij probeert ook diens keizerkroning te verhinderen.
Stelt aartsbisschop Theoderic van Besançon aan als kanselier. Bondgenoot van Wido van Spoleto en zijn zoon Lambert.
894 Arnulf trekt na een tocht tegen Wido van Spoleto ook door Bourgondië. Rudolf trekt zich terug in de bergen en Arnulf trekt weer weg, ook een aanval van Zwentibold blijft zonder succes.
912 Verovert na de dood van Arnulf van Duitsland en Zwentibold van Lotharingen, Besançon en Basel.
