Adolf was Count of Berg, Hövel, in Deutzgau and Süderland around Bochum and Hamm. He acquired Plettenberg, Gummersbach and Velbert, and became guardian of Werden, Deutz, and Cappenberg in 1118 Dünnwald, Siegburg, Gerresheim and Essen. Adolf participated in the Second Crusade and pulled back on the end of his life as a monk in Altenberg.
