Count of Alsace and Bouzonville, guardian of Remiremont, duke of Upper Lorraine (1070-1115). Diederik is the eldest son but his brother Gerhard also makes claims to the title, in 1073 comes to a settlement.
1075 fight with King Henry IV at the Battle of Homburg at the Unstruth against the rebellious Saxony. The husband of (pregnant) Hedwig fighting it on the side of the Saxons and slain during the battle. Diederik and Hedwig married a short time later.
1078 wins the city of Metz for the party of the king
1079, because of his enmity made against the Archbishop of Metz captivated. 1082 gets the archbishop back into the city hands.
