Narrative of Otto Perry Winblad (1902-1977) by Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ): Otto Perry Winblad was born in 1902 in Jersey City, New Jersey to John Edward Winblad (1856-1914) and Salmine Sophia Severine Pedersen (1861-1914). John, Otto's father, worked on a ship in Sweden and eventually that ship took him to Farsund, Norway where he met the baker's daughter and married her. Otto has two older siblings born in New York City, Anton (Tony) Julius Winblad (1886-1975) and Marie (Mae) Elizabeth Winblad (1895-1987). There were three other children that didn't live to adulthood. Around 1895 John and Salmine moved the family out of Greenwich Village in Manhattan to the quiet of Jersey City, New Jersey into a new house he had built. John worked on the docks as a longshoreman. Around 1910 John and Salmine took the family to the Isle of Pines in Cuba. They bought a plantation there but he wasn't a good farmer and the farm failed. Otto's older brother, Anton, worked as the postmaster for the tiny town of Santa Barbara. Otto's brother Anton married into the Lattin family in Cuba. Otto's parents went back to New Jersey with him in 1914 to attend his sister's wedding to Arthur Oscar Freudenberg (1891-1968). From there Otto, John and Salmine went on a trip to Norway and Sweden to visit family. While in Farsund John Winblad died on September 24, 1914 and the on December 18, 1914 Salmine died. On July 6, 1915 Otto returned to New Jersey from Norway, by himself and went to live with his sister Maria and her husband Arthur. On the same day, Anton and his wife Eva along with Dewey and Teddy Lattin returned from Cuba. In 1922 Otto was working as a typesetter in the newspaper trade. He would work at a stereotyper for New Jersey and New York newspapers till he retires in 1969. In 1923 Otto Joined the 101st Signal Battalion in the US Army and in 1924 he joined the Masons along with his cousin Teddy Lattin. On October 09, 1926 Otto married Helen Louise Hollenbach (1905-1928) of Bayonne, New Jersey and they had their only child, Geraldine Marie Winblad on May 14, 1928. Helen never recovered from the birth and she died of pueperal sepsis on May 20th. Otto went back to living with his sister Maria and for a while Geraldine was taken care of by Helen's parents. In 1932 Otto invited his neice Naida Freudedenburg to visit him at the newspaper printing plant. On June 5, 1933 Otto married Leah Way. In 1969 he retired to Whiting, New Jersey and lived in a trailer. Otto died November 17, 1977 of a heart attack at Community Memorial Hospital in Toms River, New Jersey and he is buried in George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus, New Jersey. Otto Perry Winblad (1902-1977) by Selma Louise Freudenberg (1921- ): Otto Perry Winblad (1902-1977) came from Norway to live with Maria, his sister, when his parents died. Otto was not born in Norway, but went with his parents there when they returned to their homeland. At this time Otto could only speak Norwegian. Otto Winblad tried to get Thomas Patrick Norton II (1920- ) a job at The Hudson Dispatch in Union, NJ. Tom turned it down because it didn't pay as much as he was earning so Richard (Dick) Freudenberg II (1918-1994) took the job and worked there his entire life. Otto Winblad took Selma, and others, in his car to Chicago to see Lief Jensen. Lief worked plating gold. At one point we were on a mountain and the ride was frightening to me. I was about 10 years old at the time. Otto would take Maria's children (Selma, Naida and Helen) in his car to Bayonne on hot nights. They would go to the park to cool off. Otto would take them down to Point Pleasant, NJ where Selma met Kitty. Otto retired to Whiting, NJ where he died in 1977. He lived in a spacious double trailer. It had three bedrooms and May and Otto would play bridge all night with their friends. Source: Selma Loiuse Freudenberg, Oral Testimony, 1998

Otto Perry Winblad (1902-1977): Otto was part owner of a gas station in Paramus, New Jersey around 1953 when we moved to Paramus. The gas station was at the corner of Midland Avenue and Forest Avenue and was a Shell station. I didn't have a job and he paid me $1 per hour to work from 5:00 pm to closing at 10:00 pm. The gas station also had a freezer that they sold ice cream from. Paramus was mostly celery farms back then. Source: Thomas Patrick Norton II (1920- ), July 20, 2003
