John Edward Winblad (1856-1914) by Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ): I remember my grandmother telling me that her father John Edward Winblad (1856-1914) always wanted to have a plantation, and that's why they moved to Cuba. I was never sure, from what she told me, if her and her brother Otto went to Cuba to live, or if they just visited there. John Edward Winblad (1856-1914) by Selma Louise Freudenberg (1921- ): John Winblad bought a plantation in Cuba when living in Jersey City. The plantation went bankrupt. Tony stayed behind and his two sons were born in Cuba (Norman & Roy). Anton, then Norman moved to California and later Earl moved to California. Earl, the third child was born in NY and married later on. After the bankrupcy they moved back to Summit Avenue in Jersey City. John and Salmine decided to visit back in Norway, but Maria stayed behind to collect the rent at the house they owned. John Winblad and Salmine Pedersen died in Norway. Maria Winblad met Arthur Oscar Freudenberg when he was a Sunday School teacher while she was living alone in Jersey City. May Winblad would ride her horse "Happy" bareback in Cuba. John Edward Winblad (1856-1914) by Judith Elizabeth Norton (1951- ): Maria Elizabeth Winblad (1895-1987) told me that John Winblad, her father was a stevedore on a ship. He ran away from home to work on a ship. The ship took him to Farsund, Norway where he met Salmine. John Winblad's father was the Dean of a women's college in nothern Sweden and he was very strict. Anton (Tony) Julius Winblad (1886-1975) by Susan Penny Van Deusen: Maria Elisabeth Winblad (1895-1987) told me that her mother was Salmine Pedersen, of Norway and her father was John Edward Winblad, of Sweden. She was born in New York City and when she was nine months old they moved to Jersey City and had a two family house built (1). In 1896 Jersey City was considered countrified, compared to lower Manhattan. There were fruit trees and dirt roads with horses and carriages. They had seven children and three lived beyond childhood. Anton was the oldest and Otto was the youngest. John (Eddie) Edward Winblad was a middle child and he died of pneumonia when grandma was four years old. One daughter died of whooping cough (pertussis). Eddie was buried in the Greenville section of Jersey City. Salmine Pedersen was the youngest child of her family and was two years old when her mother died. Her father was a baker and he never remarried after his wife died. He raised the 7 children on his own. John Edward Winblad’s father was the dean of a college in Sweden (2). The family had a cook and cleaning lady. John was attending college and was expected to be a priest when he ran away from home for 5 years (3). He met Salmine Pedersen in Norway (4). John Edward’s father later regretted forcing priesthood on John. In 1910 John Edward and his son Anton moved to the Isle of Pines in Cuba. They had a 4 bedroom house built with a living room and dining room In 1914 John Edward, Salmine and Otto went back to Norway, so Salmine could visit her father. They stayed at an aunt's house while there. They made trips to Sweden with Otto. They were there for less then a year when they both died. From age 17 (1914) on Maria was the head of the household taking care of Otto. She spent one and a half years herself in Cuba Notes: (1) The house was on Wayne Street, and it was sold in 1910 (2) There is a Scandinavian custom that the first born son inherits the family estate and the second born is destined for priesthood 3. John Edward Winblad’s father was Anton Julius Winblad I, he was a school teacher when John Edward was born 4. Memoirs of Earle Vincent Winblad (1916- ) on Sweden: My father told me that there were 4 brothers in Sweden that were siblings of John Edward Winblad. Anton told me he that his father was a sea captain and that his room was filled with stamps and coins from all over the world. I asked him how to prounounce our name in Swedish and he said Vin-Lead, which meant wine grass. I asked Otto to teach me Swedish and he taught me to say "Thank You" and "Skoal". They had expected that the United States would take it over, but several years later it was turned over to Cuba. My parents [Jarvis Andrew Lattin and Mary Jane Puckett] celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary [October 15, 1924] there, and my sister Eva, and I made them a suprise visit. They were so happy to see us. The boat made only two trips a week between Cuba and the island. we had our luggage inspected in Havana and spent one night there. It took about two hours to cross Cuba by train, and the boat was waiting for us. It was just an overnight trip to the Isle of Pines, and it was so calm there was hardly a ripple on the water. But we did experience a very bad hurricane while there. every one boards up their windows when they see the storm approaching. After Cuba took over the island, many of the Americans left and went back to the States as my parents did." But, it was solvable and I have the following results: Born January 18, 1856 in Anundsjö parish, Västernorrland county, Johan Edvard. Parents: Elementary school teacher Anton Julius Winblad and his second wife Elsa Maria Elisabeth Naeslund. Johan Edvard received a certificate from Anundsjö to leave for Farsund, Norway on November 20, 1879. He was then a "mate". Narrative of John Edward Winblad (1856-1914) by Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ): John Edward Winblad (1856-1914) was born in Anundsjö parish, Härnösand, Västernorrlands, Sweden on January 18, 1856 to Anton Julius Winblad I (b. August 10, 1828, Stockholm, Sweden) and Elsa Maria Elisabeth Naeslund (b. April 29, 1829, Hede Parish, Jämtland Län, Sweden). His father was the local school teacher and church organist. John was expected to be a priest like his maternal grandfather but John dropped out of school and joined the crew of a ship in Härnösand. The ship would travel all over the world and eventually took him to Farsund kommune in Vest-Agder, Norway where he met Salmine Sophia Severine Petersen (1861-1914), the baker's daughter. They likely married in Farsund in 1883 and them Salmine and John moved to New York City around 1884 Their first child, Anton Julius Winblad was born in 1886 in New York City. Two more children were then born and died in New York. Maria Elizabeth Winblad (1895-1987), their fourth or fifth child was born in 1895 on Houston Street in Manhattan. Their next child, John Edward Winblad was born in 1897 in Jersey City, New Jersey but died two years later of pneumonia. He is buried in Bayview Cemetery in Jersey City. Otto Perry Winblad, their last and seventh child was born in Jersey City, NJ in 1902. About 1909 the family moved to Santa Barbara on the Isle of Pines in Cuba. There they met Jarvis Andrew Lattin and Mary Jane Puckett. John's son, Anton married Eva Ariel Lattin, their daughter in 1910. When the farm failed they moved back to Jersey City. Maria Elizabeth Winbald married Arthur Oscar Freudenberg, a German in February of 1914. John Edward Winblad attended the wedding, then took a ship to Norway with Otto and Salmine to visit with Salmine's family. John died September 24, 1914 at age 58, and Salmine died December 18 in the same year. They are buried in Farsund.
