Lieutenant Robert Hamilton Bernays served in the Royal Engineers and was killed in action during the Western Desert Campaign in Egypt. He died in a plane crash between Greece and Italy.
Before taking part in the war, he was Major Exhibitioner of Worcester College; President of Oxford Union 1925. M.P. for Bristol (North) 1931-1945; Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Health, 1937-1939; Parliamentary secretary, Ministry of Transport, 1939-1940.
After a journey to India he wrote a book about Mahatma Gandhi, N aked Fakir (1931; published as N aked Faquir in the United States in 1932).
He has no known grave but is commemorated on the CASSINO MEMORIAL, Italy.
He was the son of the Revd. Prebendary Stewart Frederick Lewis Bernays, O.B.E. MA, CF, and Lillian Bernays and the husband of Nancy Bernays (nee Britton, daughter of M. P. George Bryant Britton) of Winterbourne Glos. He had 2 sons in that marriage.
