[edit] Che Guevara

hi stanley! thanks for your compliments. I read about che guevara son somewhere in the internet while googling, right after i returned from cuba. I did not get the information from cuba. thanks! Chaerani 03:05, 18 March 2007 (EET)

Hello Stanley -- About Omar, believed to be Che's son, this version seems to be generally accepted in Cuba, but since I am unaware of any documentary evidence to support it, I did not include it here on rodovid although I did include it in the en.wikipedia article about Che (in a content note entitled "Children"). There is, in addition, another putative child, but that claim appears to be even less substantiated so I did not mention either here or in the en.wikipedia article. -- 68.100.240.54 05:41, 18 March 2007 (EET)
Hello Chaerani! Many thanks for the info. I think it will only be possible to check the info on Che's children when Rodovid gets a Spanish localization. --Stanley 19:34, 18 March 2007 (EET)

[edit] Cross Referencing

Hello,

Is there any way to link records for a given person when the name differs in different languages?.

The example I came across is 'Pippin' (in English) in Charlemagne's family: he appears as Pépin in the French pages but no cross reference between them. As there is much more information in the French version it would be nice to have something like wikipedia's redirects or disambiguation pages to make them known to everyone.

Regards RuszewskiRuszewski 07:21, 30 April 2007 (EEST)

Hi there! This example is a classical double record. The [[Person:33005|Pippin] (erased) who was added by User:Burghardts in the English localization on 19 August 2006 is the same person as Pépin who had been added earlier by User Yann in the French localization (on 29 July 2006.) Two things need to be done: the double record needs to be deleted and the record added in the French localization needs to be translated into English. To translated a record, the following URL needs to be entered into the address bar http://en.rodovid.org/wk/Person:XXXXX where XXXXX is the number of the record added in any localization. In this way, to translate the French record #8599, the following URL needs to be entered: http://en.rodovid.org/wk/Pépin III Heristal (of Nuestria) (Carolingian, b. calculated 714 d. 24 September 768). As long as you work with the same record number in any localization, this will be the same person.
I am going to create a page in the Help section about translating records. --Stanley 13:25, 30 April 2007 (EEST)

Thanks for that information, a few further points arise:

1. I have since found that there is an entry in the Dutch localization as well, with the spelling 'Pippijn', this has a creation date earlier than the French. Is this a complication?

Pippijn III de Korte in the Dutch localization has the same record number as Pépin le Bref in the French localization. Both are filed under record #8599. This means that this is the same record. It seems to be created first in the NL localization on 5 April 2006 and then translated into French on 29 July 2006.--Stanley 11:03, 2 May 2007 (EEST)

2. In deleting and translating, do you have to do it? or the person making the original entry? ot anyone?

Any record added by a user can be deleted by the same user, provided that it has not been edited since its creation by other users. Users with the Sysop status can delete any record. Translation can be done by any user. --Stanley 11:03, 2 May 2007 (EEST)

3. If some data conflicts, which to keep? Consider the case of Adam and Eve (and family). They are in the Russian localization with birth dates in year 1 (or 6) and they are in the English localization with birth dates in 4004BC (Bishop Usher's calculation). How to reconcile?

Such cases will continue to persist until a community is formed to deal with it.--Stanley 11:03, 2 May 2007 (EEST)

4. Should mythological figures be allowed in the system at all?

I believe this is a good point for discussion. I personally against any mythological people in the database. --Stanley 11:03, 2 May 2007 (EEST)

[edit] Spanish Version

Hi Stanley, i can to traslate some contents to spanish language in a few days. --R0MAN0 10:53, 10 June 2007 (EEST)

Hello Eduardo! Many thanks for your effort. Most of system messages for the Spanish localization have already been translated. What needs to be done further is the translation of About and Help pages. How long have you been using Rodovid and how comfortable are you with MediaWiki? Regards, --Stanley 00:48, 11 June 2007 (EEST)
Stanley, I have used 3 days the system, it's very good, but I have found some twin records.. for other hand, I translated to spanish the Main Page, but i' dont know, how to change the left menu and some fields are in english in the individual register when add a person. Regards--R0MAN0 03:17, 13 June 2007 (EEST)
Hi Eduardo! The menu and other system messages can only be changed by a user with a sysop status. And double records have been a problem, too, with users adding the same record again and again for some reasons. If you feel like dedicating yourself to such work, you can ask for extended editing rights for you. --Stanley 00:09, 14 June 2007 (EEST)
Hi Stanley, I started to translate the help pages and this page http://engine.rodovid.org/wk/RdLanguageEs.php, but the changes haven't seen yet, Could you refresh those fields in the database? is it possible to create a welcome template for new users? regards. --R0MAN0 07:17, 11 August 2007 (EEST)
Thanks a lot for updating the fields. I´ll try to translate the other fields on this weekend. Regards.--R0MAN0 09:49, 29 August 2007 (EEST)

[edit] Extensions

I'm running a family wiki similar to yours on a secure server, and for privacy reasons need to keep the family's database secured. I'm interested in the extensions you developed to import family names using a gedcom and wonder if the extensions are publicly available.

I've got over 1,000+ names I need to import with more projected in the near future. Your extensions could certainly help and I definitely admire the ease of use you've developed on your wiki.

Sorry to have to post this here, and thank you!

Jacob

Dear Jacob! Our proprietory software, which is used to work with genealogical data on Rodovid, is probably the most advanced Web-based technology to date. Anyone can use Rodovid free of charge. However, the code is not open-source. The system is under continous development. --Stanley 15:33, 14 June 2007 (EEST)

[edit] Uzbek version

Hallo, Stanley! In Uzbek version, the main page should be renamed as "Bosh Sahifa". Can you do this? --Abdulla 20:05, 30 June 2007 (EEST)

Hi Abdulla! Already done by Baya. Some more texts need to be added and translated in the Uzbek localization like the system message "Рождение". Would you be willing to contribute? --Stanley 12:07, 1 July 2007 (EEST)
Yes, I would. But I don't know what I should do in order to translate the interface, please, explain. --Abdulla 10:12, 2 July 2007 (EEST)
Baya has granted you the sysop rights. There are some tips on how to start on your talk page on Rodovid UZ. --Stanley 12:04, 2 July 2007 (EEST)

[edit] Places Question

Hi Stanley, I was wondering how you are thinking of handling town/county/state places in the USA. Should a town be added to both the county and state category? For example, I added the town of Litchfield to both Jackson County and Minnesota. Also, should both the town and county be added to the USA Category? I think we need to figure this out before it becomes too big of an issue to clean up. Right now you have both county names and towns listed only in the state category that they belong to. If we follow that, then shouldn't they also be added to the USA category? Here is the hierarchy..

Town, County, State, Country

So adding a county and town to the State category would be the same as adding county and state to the Country category. I guess we just need to define what the correct way is to do this. Thanks, Jeremy. --Buttroast98 20:59, 12 July 2007 (EEST)

Hi Jeremy! You have raised a very important question. As a matter of fact, the whol structure of Rodovid needs to be categorized before it gets too big. I would say that you are right that a town should be added to all the categories: County, State and Country. The same is with the county: State and Country. Then comes the state: Country.

I was thinking of creating a category column right on the Main Page so that new visitors would be able to see some interesting people faster and older users would expand the existing categories. --Stanley 22:31, 15 July 2007 (EEST)

[edit] Printable Trees?

Hello Stanley, Is there anything in the works for printable versions of the family trees and individual information? For example, a PDF version that prints nicely for display...just basic Name/Birth/Marriage/Death info. I think that is the main thing that is missing when compared to PC family tree software. Also the Descendants Listing could be formatted more clearly. If you need any assistance let me know.--Buttroast98 05:26, 20 July 2007 (EEST)

Hi Jeremy! There will definitely be a printing feature. However, it is not an immediate priority at the moment. While printing small trees is relatively easy to organize, printing of large trees can pose a challenge... Let's turn back to this issue in mid-August. --Stanley 11:36, 20 July 2007 (EEST)

[edit] Rodovid meaning

I have noticed you removed a short explanation of the word "rodovid" that I've added before. I understand your status here as a co-founder of this site. I would like to keep that meaning written by me. Would you, please, explain your point. --Jbpzrm 09:41, 23 July 2007 (EEST)

There is a short explanation of what Rodovid stands for on http://www.rodovid.org. Then there is a special section, About Rodovid, where the meaning of the word is explained again.
I removed your explanation from the Main Page just to keep only the most essential information there. --Stanley 09:45, 23 July 2007 (EEST)

[edit] Swedish localisation

Hello! Thanks for incredibly useful and usable service. I would like to localise some names to Swedish but I didn't find the appropriate page. Is there any plan to add this language? Thanks. --ptrue

Hello Peter! As a matter of fact, you are the first to ask about a Swedish localization of Rodovid. Technically, starting a new localization is not very difficult. However, important and sometimes difficult is to find an administrator for it who would be able to contribute to its maintenance on a regular basis. If you are interested, please, let me know. --Stanley 22:26, 23 September 2007 (EEST)

--Stanley 13:37, 28 November 2007 (EET)
Указанная Вами версия записана на Вас потому, что Вы были первым, кто редактировал запис после смены механизма (движка) «Родовода». --Stanley 13:45, 28 November 2007 (EET)

[edit] Happy new Year

hellow, Stan, i hope that the new year will be a great year for you and your family, a lot of good wishes. And that rodovid grow further. Regards. --R0MAN0 01:30, 1 January 2008 (EET)

[edit] Raw edit mode

Hi Stanley, R0MAN0 directed me to you regarding a question I have about editing person/lineage/family/etc pages in "raw" mode. I know that pages in the main namespace can be edited in the traditional mediawiki way but was wondering if there is a way I can get to an "raw edit mode" where I can manually enter the appropriate tags and data, such as <clan>Doe</clan>, <name>John</name><fname>Doe</fname> etc. Thanks --Kimontalk 16:52, 20 March 2008 (EET)

Hello Kimon! Easily! Just go to My preferences in the top right corner, then to Genealogy tab, and set Editing interface to the XML mode. --Stanley 17:03, 20 March 2008 (EET)
Cool! Thank you! --Kimontalk 17:08, 20 March 2008 (EET)

[edit] protect or delete page

Hi Stanley, a few years ago I did a dumb thing and added to rodovid pages for all my family, including sensitive information. I went back and obfuscated the entries, but the data is still available in the history. They are in the italian instance, I tagged them for deletion, but somehow they don't show up as items to delete... maybe because the tag is different in Italian? Anyway, could you go ahead and delete them? I had created them anonymously from a computer when I was back in Italy. I am the only one who ever edited them. You should be able to see them at: http://it.rodovid.org/wk/Speciale:Contributions/Carcassi Thanks!

Hi Stanley, i can´t protect or delete this page Lineage:M, could you do it for me?--R0MAN0 09:36, 25 July 2008 (EEST)

Just deleted. And now watching to prevent spam.--Stanley 10:15, 25 July 2008 (EEST)

[edit] Statistics

Hello, Stanley

Could you give me some information on how the Statistics are calculated in Rodovid?.

Looking though the 'recent changes' in the English localization I see many names that should be Indonesian, Portuguese, or from ancient times (and many others). Is the Statistics routine clever enough to sort these to their correct categories, or would it include them all as English?.

My old friend Pippin is in three localizations, would he be counted three times?.

Regards

Ruszewski

Hello Ruszewski!
As a matter of fact, the records added in one localization are counted as records belonging to this localization. So, if someone from, let's say, from Portugal or Indonesia, adds records about their families from Portugal or Indonesia in the English localization, they would be counted as records added in the English localization. I would also distinguish between the records ADDED and records EXISTING. ADDED means that a record about a particular person was added in a certain localization, with a unique ID (digital number) assigned. This record can be then translated into the languages of other localizations; however, it will retain its unique ID number.
Pippin should exist with one unique ID and should be counted only once according to the first localization, in which his record was originally created.
Regards, --Stanley 09:52, 17 March 2009 (EET)

[edit] DFA project ideological drift

Hello Stanley.

DFA project inc. member (Almoustine) has significantly modified main page of english version of Rodovid. See:

Are we in DFA project inc. site?

What is your opinion about that? --Christophe Tesson 13:47, 20 березня 2010 (EET)

Hello Christophe!
Rodovid is in no way part of the DFA project. We will investigate the changes to the homepage within the next 24 hours. --Stanley 20:37, 22 March 2010 (EET)

[edit] Rodovid Rules

(Message sent to all Rodovid sysops)

Hello

There was a pretty large discussion on Rodovid Engine about establishing rules. You can see the result of this discussion on this page:

We propose to begin applying these rules Sunday, August 1 and to watch how it runs. Sincerly. --Christophe Tesson - talk. 12:10, 24 July 2010 (EEST)
