Hindu mythology says this king attempted to set himself up as a rival to the all pervasive omnipotent god, and institute a system of worship wherein the King was deified and became a living god in his lifetime. The king's son rejected this notion in favor of a monotheistic devotion to Vishnu. It was said that Hiranyakashipu wreaked destruction on the temple of Vishnu located at Sigiriya by toppling its central support pillar. Hiranyakashipu and was subsequently killed by the hand of the God Vishnu who had taken the form of the family Totem (Narasimhadevi, a God that is half lion/man) that sprang out of the rubble and disembowelled the king. This could be a metaphor for the overthrow of Hiranyakashipu and the hand of relatives.
