Il fut le fils d'Alp Arslan.
1072, après l'assassinat de son père, il accéda au trône sous la tutelle du vizir Nizam al-Mulk déjà au service de son père.
1073, après son accession au pouvoir, il reconstruisit Ispahan et il en fit sa capitale délaissant Ray.
Les revenus de l'immense Empire seldjoukide furent utilisés pour faire de la ville un centre artistique et scientifique important, des écoles comme la Nizamiyyah ou la Ibni-Sina furent alors fondées et rayonnèrent dans la civilisation islamique.
1074, Omar Khayyam dirigea l'observatoire d'Ispahan et il créa le calendrier persan qui est encore utilisé aujourd'hui.
1087, sous son règne, l'Empire seldjoukide connut son apogée, de la mer Égée au Turkestan.
1092, il mourut, certainement empoisonné, entraînant une guerre civile qui fit éclater l'Empire entre ses quatre fils.
