Il naquit dans les steppes d'Asie centrale du Grand Khorassan qui appartint au sultanat de Ghazni.
Il fut avec son frère Toghrul élevé par Seldjouk jusqu'à l'âge de 15 ans.
Avec son frère, ils unirent autour d'eux toutes les tributs Oghouzes et ils attaquèrent le sultanat de Ghazni.
1060, il mourut à Sarakhs.
Son fils Alp Arslan lui succéda comme gouverneur du Khorasan.
