John Joseph Burke (c1868-1939) aka Black Jack Burke by James Joseph Norton II: Jack was a ne'er do well. Josephine (May) Veronica Burke (1907-1995) said that the only two things he could do well was drink and dance. "Black Jack" Burke would walk across the Hudson River from New Jersey to New York when it was frozen. Mary Margaret Burke would always say "He was a rascal". Jack was a bum. All the children were put into an orphanage. Source: James Joseph Norton II, Oral Testimony, 1998

John Joseph Burke (c1868-1939) aka Black Jack Burke (1868-c1940) by Mary Jane Burke (1941- ): He struggled to raise the children. He had a quick temper, and drank, but was a good person. He owned a bar on Garfield Avenue in Jersey City and he died on Grand Street in Jersey City. His family disinherited him. His wife lived on Harmon Street in Jersey City with Owen Burke when she died. When Bertha Burke died everyone stayed at my house in Freehold, NJ for the funeral. He is buried at Holy Name Cemetery or Holy Cross Cemetery in Jersey City with his second wife. Bertha and May were taken care of by Mary Ellen Burke. May Burke didn't like her father, she called him a ne'er do well. Source: Thomas Patrick Norton (1920- ), Oral Testimony, March 20, 2001

John Joseph Burke (1868-c1940) aka Black Jack Burke by Mary Jane Burke (1941- ): I think the family of John Joseph may have been given to his sister when they were in grade school. They were sent there when he was having financial trouble, so they could have a proper education. They were never in an orphanage at any time. My dad said he hated living with Mary Ellen Burke, and he never felt wanted there. The kids were around 13 and 14 and theyear was around 1924 or 1925. John Joseph Burke's children ended up moving back with their parents, and Berth and May stayed with Mary Ellen Burke. Money was very tight and William never finished grade school. My father, John Stephen Burke had a job rewiring gas fixtures for elecricity, then he worked in the Brooklyn Naval Yard. He lied about his age so he could get a job there. He was a civilian employee. Owen worked for a trucking company in Piscataway that had moved from Jersey City. Source: Mary Jane Burke (1941- ), Telephone Conversation, March 23, 2001

Original Narrative of John (Black Jack) Joseph Burke (1868-1939): He was known as "Black Jack". He was born in 1868, most likely in Jersey City, New Jersey to William Burke (1839-1919) and Margaret Kane (1834-1912). Both his parents were born in Ireland and both are buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Darby, PA. Very little is known about him, except that he was known as someone who never did well with his life. Josephine Burke, his daughter, once said that the he could only do two things well; drink and dance. He married Nora Finn (1874-1898) around 1889 and together they had a daughter, Mary Margaret Burke in 1890. Nora Finn died in 1898 possibly during childbirth with their second child. That child also died but there is no record for the death of Nora and her infant. John Burke found himself incapable of raising his daughter alone so the job went to the late Nora Finn's sister, Katherine. Katherine never married and worked as a secretary at the American Pencil Company. John Burke then married Josephine Smith (1874-c1961) around 1900. Together they had 6 children that survived infancy. At this point the family fell on hard times, and Mary (Mame) Ellen Burke (1870-1957) decided that she would raise the two girls in Swathmore, PA. Updated Narrative of John (Black Jack) Joseph Burke (1868-c1940): Josephine (May) Veronica Burke called John Burke "Black Jack". He was born in 1868, in Jersey City, New Jersey to William Burke (1839-1919) and Margaret Kane (1834-1912), probably on his parent's dairy farm on Atlantic Avenue. Both his parents were born in Sligo, Ireland and both are buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Darby, PA. Josephine (May) Burke would call him a ne'er do well and once said that the he could only do two things well; drink and dance. This prejudice against him propablly comes from Mary (Mamie) Ellen Burke, John Joseph Burke's sister who raised both Josephine and Bertha Burke. He married Nora Finn (1874-1898) around 1889 and together they had a daughter, Mary Margaret Burke in 1890. Nora Finn died in 1898 possibly during childbirth with their second child. That child also died but there is no record for the death of Nora or her infant in the New Jerset State Archive. John Burke found himself incapable of raising his daughter alone so the job went to the late Nora Finn's sister, Katherine Finn. This practise was common at the time. Katherine never married and worked as a secretary at the American Pencil Company. She made a good living and her house was filled with fine decorative atrworks, some are still in the family. John Burke then married Josephine Smith (1874-c1961) around 1900. Together they had 6 children that survived infancy. As the children were older, around 1925, they were sent to live with John Burke's sister, Mary (Mame) Ellen Burke (1870-1957). She decided that she would raise the two girls in Swathmore, PA. The sons and one sister went back to live with their father. He is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington, NJ. Source: Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ), Written Testimony, March 27, 2001 My father would have a short temper but he wouldnt stay angry. My father gave up smoking and drinking, he was strong willed. He didn't believe in staying angry. Mamie would always critisize him. Source: Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ), Written Testimony, March 29, 2001

John Joseph Burke (c1868-1939) aka Black Jack Burke by John Edward Burke (1934- ): My grandfather, John Joseph Burke, may have died around 1939 when I was about 5 years old. I didn't go to the funeral but the funeral service was at St. Patrick's Church in Jersey City. I think he was buried in Holy Name Cemetery. I'm holding in my hand a block of wood that has on it a piece of metal with his picture embossed on it. His face, hair and beard are all seen in this picture, I don't think this one was ever used. My grandfather showed it to me a couple of times before he died. He was working for a printing company and this was for printing a type of calling card. He had severe gout in his right foot and it was wrapped in bandages and he had trouble moving around the house. My dad said he liked to read the Sunday comics to me. He would sit at the table in the dining room with his foot wrapped up and be excited when I would come over. He had a large mustache. My father was the apple of his eye, and he had a similar temperment to my grandfather. My grandfather was a difficult person to get to know, he was an angry person and he had a falling out with his own father. William Burke, his father, thought he spent too much money on liquor and other temporary things, he couldnt hold down a job and moved from job to job. He couldn't get along with anyone he worked for, he got into fights and would lose his job, he had a lot of anger. My own dad was somewhat like that. I can see my father in my granddad, very quick to anger. My dad always said that Bertha and May moved to PA to live with Mamie Burke. My father went there at Mamie's request to get an education. Mamie was critical of my grandfather and my father defended him, and he would fight with her, and he was sent back to live with him. Bertha and May stayed with Mamie Burke and Owen, William, John Jr. and Margaret left and moved back with their dad. William quit school and got a job and supported the family from then on. My dad cared about May and Bertha but he always said that Mamie stole the girls away and alienated them from him. When I knew John Joseph I, my granddad at age 3 or 4, he lived on Grand Street in Jersey City, I can picture the house. My dad said the family owned a dairy farm. My grandad lived the last few years of his life on 740 Grand Street. I can see the kitchen of the house where John Joseph would spent most his time, Josephine would wait on him. He would sit at the dining room table sleeping in his chair. I don't think I ever saw him get out of his chair. The gout was so bad he was incompacitated, with huge bandages around his foot. I can picture him in my mind wincing in pain. Note: He is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington Source: John Edward Burke (1934- ), Telephone Conversation, March 27, 2001

John Joseph Burke I (c1868-1939) aka "Black Jack" Burke by Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ): I had given up on ever finding any more information on John Joseph Burke I (c1868-1939). I thought I would never find out where he was buried or when he died. I searched for months in the Holy Name Cemetery Index looking up each of the 30 or 40 John Burkes and then looking up their death certificates. None of the death certificates had the proper parents. On February 20, 2001, I called William Burke III (1971- ), by coincidence it was his birthday, and I asked him if he knew any Outwaters that I could talk to. The Outwaters are his mothers side of the family. He gave me a few names and I looked up their numbers in the Internet telephone directory. One person I found was Louise Outwater (1921- ) and her son Robert Farrell (1958- ). They gave me information on when John Burke II (1909-1986) died and the next week I went to the New Jersey Health Department to look up his death certificate. I was very excited when they handed it to me. The informant for his death was his daughter. No one ever told me that he had children or was even married. The name of the daughter was Mary DeBenedictis of Cherry Hill, New Jersey. The Internet directory listed only two DeBenedictis names and I called and left a message. The next day I called again and she knew who the Nortons were. She had lots of information on her grandfather, and what happened to the boys in the family. She said that her grandfather died in 1940 and gave me the name of her brother who was older, he gave the same date for his grandfather's death and both thought that he was buried in Holy Name Cemetery. I took a second trip to the archive and found no death certificate in 1940, but found it in 1939. It listed that he was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington, NJ. I called the cemetery and they gave me the date of death for his wife. That night I was looking in the index for the 1910 Census in PA at "ancestry.com" and found the Burkes in PA living with the Pattersons. I also looked up some of the Hammelbachers in NJ and PA and they told me that Mary Ellen Burke was their grandmother. I was always told that her husband was married before and that the kids were from that marriage. This let me add two new lines to the Burke family.
