Notes
Information from Belle: Les had asthma for many years before dying of cardiomegaly, apparently due to the large doses of cortisone hed been taking for his asthma. He sometimes had 2-3 injections of cortisone a day, at a cost of ten pounds each, when that would probably have been equivalent to at least the average weekly wage.
Les stood as a Labor candidate in Yarrawonga. He worked as an accountant. He and Belle ran the corner store in Kenilworth Street Albury during WWII. They had the snack bar concessions at both cinemas in Albury, and Belle also had a dress shop.
Later, Belle and Les had a store in Melbourne at Elwood. Belle told the story of people coming from many miles away for their home made icecreams, which were obviously very popular. Eventually they moved to Warwick in Queensland, on medical advice for Less asthma, and later to Brisbane - now known to be a particularly bad spot for asthmatics.
I remember the Riley that Pa drove - Im not sure of the model, but by checking on the net, I think it was most similar to the LHD 1953 Riley RMF 2 1/2 litre saloon.
In Warwick, Les worked for a local car dealership, and in Brisbane, they bought another corner store in Brook Street, Windsor. It was while living here that Les died in the Mater Hospital.
