Notes
Elsie was a very tall and elegant woman. The only memory I have of their home at 199 Clemow Avenue was that the home had domestic help and 2 staircases! This was quite amazing to me at the time. When I was in grade 5, my grandmother gave me a most treasured Brownie Kodak Instamatic camera (blue) with built-in flash for Christmas. This camera took many pictures which have helped me to retain many memories from that time. I can recall as a child visiting her apartment at 20 Powell Ave.(just down the street from our home 238) to practise the piano and run errands for her at 10 cents a trip when she was too ill. There was a large ping pong table in the basement. Granny Thompson would take my mother, brother, Bob, and I to eat lunch at the Green Valley Restaurant which was located on Prince of Wales Drive. It was a fancy restaurant with linen tablecloths and napkins. I can remember granny giving me lessons on proper etiquette while at the restaurant. On one particular occasion, I was told that it wasn't proper to lick one's fingers and use them to pick up bread crumbs from the table. I can also remember frequent Sunday dinners at 20 Powell Ave. and was enthralled by the lovely chimes of the rock clock which granny left to me when she passed away. The chime mechanism had been replaced by an electric mechanism when it was unable to be repaired. Granny Thompson was an avid smoker as am I. When granny Thompson died, it was the first time I had ever seen my mother cry. She was much loved and respected by her family friends, neighbours and the congregation of her church.
