Notes
Was a Russian diplomat in Japan (1858-65) and Orientalist of Belarusian descent.
Graduated from the St. Petersburg Theological Academy (1839). From 1839 to 1848 he was a member of the Russian ecclesiastical mission in Beijing. From 1853 to 1855 he was an interpreter from the Chinese language at the Putyatin embassy in Japan. From 1856 to 1858 he was an employee of the Asian Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. With the help of the Japanese Tachibana, he compiled the first Japanese-Russian dictionary (St. Petersburg, 1857). Author of works about China and Japan, about the peculiarities of the Japanese and Chinese languages.
