"The McKinley Family" (page 4) by H.T.O. Blue, genealogist and researcher of the McKinley Family from Ohio History Sketches appearing in The Observer and The East Canton News:
REVOLUTIONARY WAR RECORD: "David McKinley joined the local militia of Pennsylvania in Chanceford Township on April 16, 1776. His company was composed of fifty-nine men. It was the 6th company of the Sixth Battalion of the York County militia. On the 20th of June his company was enrolled for active duty in the Continental Army under the command of General George Washington. From 1776 to 1779 he served under the following Captains in this order: William McKaskey, Ross Laird, Joseph Reed, Holderbaum, Sloymaker, Raub, and Harnahan. He was in the battles of Amboy and Chestnut Hill; and is said to have been one of the privates under General Lee when he captured the fort at Paulus Hook, now a part of Jersey City, New Jersey. It is said by historians that the capture of the fort at Paulus Hook was an exploit of such importance that Congress expressed its appreciation by presenting General Lee with a gold medal and $15,000 to be distributed among the non-commissioned officers and privates who were engaged in the undertaking. With the gift were these words from Congress: 'For the remarkable prudence, address and bravery displayed.' It is reasonably certain that David McKinley took part in the defense of Fort Washington on the Hudson River; and that he served almost continuously from June, 1776 until early in 1779 when his final enlistment was completed."
RESIDENCE: "After David McKinley's service in the Revolutionary War, he returned to his York County, Pennsylvania home for a few years, but at the age of 25 he removed to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania with his wife, Sarah Gray McKinley, whom he married on December 10, 1780. He continued his vocation as a weaver and did farming on a small scale for fifteen years, when he again removed to Mercer County, Pennsylvania, about 25 miles northwest of Youngstown, Ohio. From 1795 untill 1814 David and Sarah continued to make their home in Mercer County."
