Notes
The 1861 Census records an Antonius Ravenolia living in 22 Inspection Street, Ward 3, Charleston, SC. Closeup views 1 and 2 (before last top left building on Inspection Street) of the area may be found in these 1872 3D maps by Drie, courtesy of The Library of Congress.
Through family lore we learn that JD Ravenolia's father was killed in the Civil War when he was a baby, 1862 or 1863?, and that he spent his youth in Charleston at a Catholic orphanage, most probably under the care of The Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Mercy. It is told that the nuns from the orphanage would pay surprise visits to JD and his mother Ann demanding that the child return to the orphanage. Interestingly, the nuns would argue that mother and son were living in sin, to which an incensed JD would send them away.
We may get a glimpse at the hardships of those enduring the need of orphanage assistance by reading The Charleston Orphan House and Poor Mothers and The Charleston Orphan House.
On September 2, 1886 The NY Times reports a devastating earthquake in the area.
