According to the Greeks, Areius was the same as the god Ares. He posessed a Dragon which was killed by Cadmus and its teeth sown as seeds to give birth to the race of Sparta. I believe this is a metaphor to preserve the history of conquest in the region of the Black Sea.
Areius was a priest-king of the divine twins. The Dragon would represent a local very powerful champion probably the General of Areius' army. During battle between the "Dragon" of Areius and Cadmus. Cadmus is victorius and is elevated to the status of Dragon. The teeth would be the surviving forces of Areius plus Cadmus' own men. Areius the priest king initiates Cadmus into the cult of war, gives him leadership of the army and marries him to Harmonia Areius' own daughter.
