Notes
"John Avery (Everett, Averett) has been implicated in the kidnapping and forced piracy of Edward Carwitheris of Magavissey Cornwall. Edward stated in sworn testimony that in 1694 he was hired at Plymouth to serve aboard the James and Thomas, for a trip to Barbados. During the voyage, they met the ship FANCY which being captained by John Henry Every pulled alongside the James and Thomas, and threatened the crew. They removed several crewmen to the FANCY including Bickford, Carwitheris, and several others. Bickford and 5 of the crew members were allowed to return to the James and Thomas, but Carwitheris remained onboard the FANCY with Every after which they voyaged together to Guinea and the East Indies."
