Excavation of Edgils barrow revealed a powerful chief on a bear skin with two dogs and rich grave offerings including a man in Frankish dress (with gold thread cloth) a Frankish sword adorned with gold and garnets and a tafl game with Roman pawns of ivory, and four Persian cameo casket mounts.

While some scolars believe that Edgils was a contemporary of Beowulf II Aelfhere (Agathyrsi, b. 495), some say that it was his grandfather instead who was mentioned since it would have been chronologically difficult for the younger Edgils to have been a contemporary of the generations elder Beowulf.
