Born posthumously, Charles Edward became Duke of Albany at birth. In 1918, he renounced his right to the throne for himself and his heirs, and he was removed from the British peerage in 1919.

Although Charles Edward inherited the dukedom of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in 1900, technically he did not become duke until his twenty-first birthday, five years later.
