Notes
Grandson of Joseph Phasael (Hervichad Pheororas, The Idumean) (Herodian, d. -40) Great Nephew of Herod I (The Great) ? (Hervichad Pheororas) (Herodian, b. -73 d. -4)
The children of Joseph Phasael were recognized by the Parthian Magi as legitimate heirs of the combined kingdom of Israel and Judah. Their grandfather Phasael was a Parthian prince in exile, and the heir of Descalytis. The Parthians were notoriously bloodthirsty when it came to culling the list of hereditary princes rendering Princes scarce, however they were particularly protective of the Jewish priests and princes. This gave rise to an old proverb “When you see a Parthian charger chained to a tombstone in the Land of Israel, the hour of the Messiah will be near”. Ironically, this proverb was fulfilled in the visit of the Parthian Magi to the house of Joseph Phasael where the Parthian princes paid homage to prince Zeionises the son of Joseph Phasael and Miramne of the house of David.
