It is believedby who? that Bilchildis was rendered Heiress of Poitiers by virtue of her marriage to Bernard du Poitiers. Upon his death his widow, Bilchildis remarriedRef needed ! retaining her title of comtesse and passing her title to her son by second marriage. Her second husband acting regent for his minor son the new count also assumed the title Comte du Poitiers. However based on her birth date and Bernard's death date this is unlikely to be the same Bilchildis. She would have been 14 years old at his death, since marriage age for women in the middle ages was 12 it is possible that she could have been married for 2 years prior to his death but it is unlikely that she would have produced children by Bernard.
Some possibilities exist:
- It is possible that the Bilchildis married to Bernard was of another generation.
- it is unlikely that she would have been the mother of Bernard's son Ranulf since they were the same age.
- It would be unlikely that Bilchildis would have given birth to two sons both named Ranulf. Ranulf I de la Haye is a good candidateRef needed ! for the dispossesed son of Bernard with his mother being a daughter of the Counts de la Haye with some ties to Poitiers.
This is an unresolved issue that warrants further investigation.
