Notes
|
Benjamin Powley enlisted to serve Company D of the 67th Illinois Infantry during the Civil War. His enlistment date was May 31, 1862.
In 1870, Benjamin and Martha Powley are living in Chicago, Illinois. He is working as a spice mill salesman. Also living with them is Martha's sister, Melinda Kennedy (or Canaday). (Melinda later married Benjamin's brother, Hiram Powley.)
In 1880, Benjamin Powley is living in Chicago, Illinois, and working as a hardware salesman. The census lists his wife as Martha, age 22. There is some discrepancy in the records, since Martha's gravestone says she died in 1873 (which would make her unavailable to be counted in the 1880 census). If she was alive in 1880, her age would have been 32. Either the date on Martha's gravestone is wrong, or the census taker recorded the name of Benjamin's wife incorrectly. The 1880 census also lists the family as having three children: Benjamin, Albert, and Clyde.
In 1920, Benjamin Powley is living with his daughter Ida L. Powley in Papineau Township, Iroquois County, Illinois.
