According to family's legend, crusaders have brought his ancestors from Slovakian town Zilina (Zhilina) by force to Lithuania. So they set up their first village Zilina (now Zilinai) in Lithuania and started using surnames Zhilin,Zhilinsky,Zilionis (Zhilionis).
The legend also tells that one Young Zhilinsky was married to some much older Smolensk duchess and started the dynasty of Lith.dukes Zhilinsky. They are described in the book "Kniaziowie litewsko-ruscy od konca XIV wieku". However, when Russians have captured Smolensk from Lithuanians in 1656, the last living duke Zhilinsky (Piotr) has adopted Russian citizenship and lost his title of Lith.dukes. The most famous member of this offshoot was Tsar's Chief of General Staff Yakov Zhilinsky. Germans surrounded and destroyed his two entire armies in the second Tannenberg battle in August of 1914.Russians have lost twelve times more troops than Germans. Germans needed sixty trains to remove Russian weapons. Germans considered it was the revenge for defeat in the first Tannenberg battle against Poles and Lithuanians in 1410. After this fiasko, Russian army was not able to recover and finally it caused revolution. It is illustrated in the film clip "Doctor Zhivago - scene on road" on google.com. That is why, Tsar's war minister Polivanov wrote in his diary that Zhilinsky was related to Jewish masons...Thanks to this revolution, western republics have escaped Russian empire.
Some historians wrote Yakov Zhilinsky was killed by bolsheviks in 1918, but do not provide any évidences. The others refer to witnesses and wrote that Yakov Zhilinsky was recruited by bolsheviks and died only in 1936.
Jacob Jilinsky was managing the Soviet spy center ARCOS in London and notorious "Cambridge five spy ring". So British police raided ARCOS and confiscated a lot of documents. It caused cutting out Soviet-British diplomatic relatioships. I suspect Yakov Zhilinsky and Jacob Jilinsky was the same person.
