Il fut le fils et le successeur du roi Bagrat Ier d'Abkhazie.
904, il s'empara du Karthli.
Il dut faire face à l’alliance des dynastes bagratides, le roi Smbat II d'Arménie et son lointain parent et allié le roi Adarnassé IV d'Ibérie. Vaincu, il fut capturé par trahison par le roi d'Arménie lors de négociations et il fut emprisonné à Ani. Le roi Smbat II le relâcha peu après.
