Tried but acquitted of charges of cowardice for his part in loss of the battle of Yellow Ford which was the worst defeat that has ever been suffered by the English in Ireland. He did not return to England but remained in Ireland some time and emigrated to Virginia Colony. He was a close personal friend of Bacon.
This Montagu was the brother of Edward the 1st Baron of Montagu, and the son of Sir Edward Montagu of Boughton by his wife Elizabeth Harington.
