Notes

Dating of the reign of Emperor Jie can be accomplished by identifying the dates of several natural disasters which occurred during his reign:

  1. . in the 10th year of Jie's reign, when five stars were seen in the sky in alignment and a meteor shower occurred, followed by an earthquake.
  1. . In the 29th year of Jie's reign, Qu mountain (瞿山) collapsed with a landslide.
  1. . During the last year of Jie's reign, ice formed during the summer mornings and frost occurred through July. Heavy rainfall toppled buildings, hot and cold weather arrived in disorder, and crops failed. This event can be identified as a volcanic winter tied to the Minoan eruption of Thera circa 1628 BC.
