Il fut le fils aîné de Bagrat III.
1565, à la mort de son père, il devint le troisième roi du royaume d'Iméréthie.
Sous son règne, l'Iméréthie s'effondra sous les coups des Ottomans et des guerres civiles des principautés semi-indépendantes.
1578, il dut se soumettre une nouvelle fois aux Ottomans.
1583, faible et âgé, il essaya de préparer le trône d'Iméréthie pour son fils Léon, son troisième héritier depuis la mort de ses aînés, et par crainte de son frère Constantin, il l'emprisonna avec son fils le futur roi Rostom.
