Notes
I believe that Smendes III has been improperly associated with Menelek I (son of Solomon) due to a misreading of archaeological artifacts which refer to Smʿt as a ruler of Dilmunat. A more careful study show that Smʿt was Candace Samʿati the Queen consort of Ra'adim the King of Dilmunat during the early 7th Century BC, not the male priest of Amun named Smendes. The Son of Smendes is according to legend one of the companions of Menelek the I who accompanied him on his return to Saba and Minaea.
It is not certain that Smendes III was the son of Osorkon I as this would make him a brother of Smendes II who was certainly the son of Osorkon I. That they were related is not doubted as both Smendes II and Smendes III were high priests of Amun; but it is nearly certain that they were of different generations possibly father and son, or uncle and nephew, rather than brothers. Smendes III is named as a contemporary and companion of Menelek I the son of Solomon and Maatkare (the Queen of Sheba) which would put his years of service at a later date than Smendes II and give him ties to both the Judean kingdom as well as those of the Sabeans and Minaeans, and make him a possible progenitor of the Kings of Dilmunat (after 1000 BCE).
