According to Benjamin Forbes, in a letter to Clarke Pratt Pond dated 7 Mar 1946: "The picture in the square framed effect is from the small daguerreotype of Sally Frisbie’s daughter, our grand-mother, Mrs. Emeline Frisbie Pond. According to the legend accompanying the picture, which you will recall is in my mother’s hand writing, the picture was taken at Rochester N.Y. in 1848, when grandmother was 39 years of age.
Since this was the year in which the Pond family migrated from Vermont to Cleveland, via the Erie Canal, when there was a tie- up for two or three weeks due to a break in the canal, it is quite possible that this break occurred somewhere near Rochester, and that the young folks whiled away some of the weary hours getting their pictures taken."
