Event: Fact 1620 English Naval Admiral & Hero Note: Richard was the only son of William and was a constant companion of his father and uncles at sea. He was with his father in the West Indies, then the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588 and again in 1590 he was part of the attempt to meet the Spanish Silver Fleet. In 1593 he embarked on a voyage around the world. After touching Brazil he passed through the Strait of Magellan and then took and plundered Valparaiso. But on June 22, 1594 he was defeated and imprisoned, until 1602, after a hard fight in San Mateo Bay, Peru. He was ransomed (for 12,000 Pounds) from prison in Spain and subsequently became Vice Admiral of Devon. He was the 6th Captain to sail around the world. Later he was second in command in the defeat of the Algerian Pirates in 1620-21. He was mayor of Plymouth and a member of Parliament.
