Notes
As a descendant of the Dukes of Brittany, Peter Abelard posed a threat to the ambitions of the Norman Dukes. The alliance between Peter Abelard and Heloise (a Flemish relative of the Norman family) was particularly troublesome since it presented a union of the two houses in a relationship that was potentially stronger than that of the house of William and Matilda, and signaled a potential return of the Flemish/Breton dynasty. The solution was a forced annulment of the clandestine marriage and castration of Peter in a supposed fit of familial honor. Both Peter and Heloise retired to the security of Church service and dedicated their child Astralabius to perpetual service of the church.
