In Ancient Greek tradition he is the personification of the "upper sky," space, and heaven, and the elemental god of the "Bright, Glowing, Upper Air." and synonomous with the Akkadian El, Hebrew Elohim, Norse Ether. The Greeks chose to personify the conditions of the Earth's creation. Giving them human traits and procreative capacity. Thus you find things like Time (Chronos), Formlessness (Chaos), and other primordial conditions personified as Gods. The Akkadians and Eygptians did not personify the Earth's creation to the same degree, choosing instead to communicate primordial conditions as Days or Epochs, and hence in terms of Genealogy was a bit more reliable in terms of identifying living "Gods" ie. Gods who were deified humans.
Because this is so problematic I have broken Aether into a separate "Person" in order to illustrate continuity and prevent wholesale confusion of the genealogical lineages. Just remember that Aether/El/Ahura Mazda are the same diety, any children attributed to Aether need to be considered alegorical unless they are identified (As heros and/or legendary entities) and merged into the lineages of man.
