Ovid himself wrote of his crime that it was carmen et error — "a poem and a mistake." He claimed that this crime was worse than murder and caused more harm than poetry. It is rumored that he had an affair with Julia the Younger (Corinna) who was also exiled at the same time. Julia's husband was executed by Augustus for a plot sometime later.
