Constantine surnamed Magnus or the Great, was horn Feb. 27, probably in the year 274, at Na'issns (Nissa), in Dardaniu or Up|»er Moesia, the country where his family had for some time been settled. Victor {Caes.), makes him 62 at the time of his death, but Socrates (i. 39) says he was in his 65th year. The place of his birth is given as Naissus by Anonvmus Valesii, Constantine Porphyrogenitus {De iyiematibu<, ii. 9). and Stephanus Byzant. s. r. Niitrcroy. Julius Firmicus (I, 2) [daces it at Tarsus (cf. Ammian. xxi. 10), and Nicephorus Callisti at Drepanum, the birthplace of Helena. The opinion that he was born in Britain, and of a British princess, current since the time of William of Malmesbury, and accepted by Baronius, seems to have arisen from a mere misunderstand

ing of two passages in the Panegyrists, who address him as "taking his rise" from Britain {Pan. Max. et Const, iv. and Eumen. in nit. »rb. Trev. ix.), and possibly from a confusion of his mother Helena with her namesake, wife of Maguus Maximus.
