Notes

Per Daniel's daughter Mrytle Briggs Reynolds: Dad was left an orphan when about 11 years old. His mother died when she was not very old. His father William was accidentally killed by a runaway team of horses. He was 95 and deaf at the time and did not hear the team coming. He was walking for exercise. William was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. My father was a real scotchman, very sensitive, hot temper, but always had it under perfect control. He owned 40 acres at Dundee, Delaware County, IA, and then moved to Forestville, Delaware County, IA. At Forestville ran a blacksmith and wagon shop. The family lived above the shop.

Daniel was part of the Grand Army of the Republic and saw service during the Civil War as a private in Company G, 42nd Illinois,Infantry, from October 18, 1864, to June 18, 1865. He was enrolled as a substitute for John Clay, who paid Daniel to take his place in the war.

WPA records indicate that Daniel Briggs once had a GAR stone (without any dates) at Forestville Cemetery. There is no stone. He died suddenly of heart failure on Monday, Feb. 27, 1905. His death happened while police were getting ready to take him back to the the soldiers' home in Marshalltown, Marshall County, IA, where he had been since 1903. He was 89 years and 12 days old. Rev. Meek of the Wesleyan Methodist church officiated at the funeral held on Wed. at the Methodist church in Dundee, IA, at 2:00 p.m.

In his civil war military records his is described as 5',3" tall, dark complexion, blue eyes, brown hair and occupation when enrolled blacksmith.
