The surname "Zoccarato" is typical of the Padova Province which is located in the Veneto Region, in Italy. It is a fact that the localities ofCampodarsego, Santa Giustina in Colle, and San Giorgio delle Pertiche have the highest concentration of Zoccarato in the world. Interestingly, these three cities are literally next to each other; which leads us to believe that, in some way, every Zoccarato in the world descend from the same ancestor.

[edit] Origin of the Surname

Zoccarato is typical of the Padova Province in the Veneto Region, Italy. In the Padova Province there is a large concentration in Campodarsego, Santa Giustina in Colle, and San Giorgio delle Pertiche. However, other cities in the Padua Province with a large Zoccarato population include Limena e Vigodarzere. In the Veneto Province, Zoccaratos are concentrated in Portogruaro, Caorle e Mira.

The suffix -ato is common when originating from a forebearer, in this case, refers to the families of a zoccaro, who would probably be a person who grew and sold zucche (pumpkin), or who collected and sold zocchi (sticks), but could also refer to someone who came from a city such as Grisignano di Zocco or Pian dei Zocchi, located in Vicenza.

Currently, due to 1) the emmigration of different Zoccarato family members, 2) the misspelling upon arrival in ports, and 3) little formal schooling of immigrants, the Zoccarato surname has suffered changes. The main variations include: Zocratto, Zuccaratto, and Zucherato.

Sometimes members of the Zoccarato family had their surname spelled Zoccherato. The mixture of "ca" with "che" is relatively common. For example, the Italian word "maccheroni" is translated worldwide as macaroni em English, macarón, or macarrão in Portuguese. Other Italian surnames such as Ceccato/Ceccheto or Zuccato/Zuccheto also had similar discreptions.

Anyhow, we see that this interchanging was so common that in some of the vital records in the newly created Kingdom of Italy, that some their surname in the index as Zoccherato but would have Zoccarato in the record itself; or vice-versa. Another common happening was that in the vital record the person's last name was Zoccherato but the witness who was a brother or cousin had their surname as Zoccarato; or vice-versa.

Moreso, when members of the Zoccarato family migrated to other parts of Italy, e.g. Venice or Mantova, the prefix "Zo" changed to "Zu". This is the the case with Giovanna Regina who was born in Campodarsego in 1885 as Zoccarato e passed away 4 years later (1889) in Mantova as Zuccherato. My grandfather, João Zoccarato, was baptized as "Zuccherato" in Brazil.

It is evident that the original family surname was Zoccarato, which with time mutated to Zuccarato e Zuccherato. As you can see in the maps provided in the links above, the concentration of Zuccarato and Zuccherato are precisely in Mantova and Venezia which are cities where Zoccarato families migrated to from Padova.

For example Angelo Zoccarato who was born in San Giorgio delle Pertiche, Padova died as a resident of Mira in Venezia. Actually the city of Mira is full of Zuccarato. This makes us believe that Angelo went to live close to his relatives Zuccarato. Above we mentioned the example of Giovanna Regina Zoccarato who was also from Padova, Campodarsego to be exact, and passed away in Mantova, a city full of Zuccherato. Moreover, two Brazilian families descendents of Zuccherato and Zuccarato have recently discovered that in reality the surname of their ancestor was Zoccarato. Part of the confusion is due to the fact that some Zoccarato family members would sign their surnames as Zuccarato, Zoccherato, etc. But when researching vital records, there is no doubt they were actually Zoccarato.

[edit] Immigration to Brazil e Argentina

The large "Zucaratto" branch in the state of Espírtio Santo in Brazil are descendents of: Giovanni Zuccaratto.

Giovanni's cousin, immigrated to Brazil with his family in 1894 , in Rio de Janeiro and later migrated to Minas Gerais: Luigi Zuccherato.

Another part of the Zoccarato family desembarked in Brazil, very likely in 1895, en route to Minas Gerais: Antonio Nicolò Zocratto. (This Antonio's father, Michele Zoccherato, was first cousin with the above mentioned Luigi Zoccarato and Giovanni Zoccarato.

One of Antonio Nicolò's cousins immigrated to Argentina: Isidoro Zoccarato.

Another part of the Zoccarato family came via Fortunata Raggio ship to Brazil in 1896 and established themselves in the town of São Carlos in the state of São Paulo: Giorgio Zoccarato.

Another part of the Zoccarato family came on the Sempione ship to Brazil in 1897: Sante Zoccarato.

Our Italian cousin, Lisa Zoccarato, told us that her grandpa's brother also immigrated to Argentina: Otello Bruno Zoccarato. Giovanni who immigrated to Espírito Santo is Otello's grandfather's brother. In February of 2010, Tiago Maia had the chance to contact Otello Bruno who is 85 years old.

Since all Zoccaratos are likely to share a common ancestor, it is imperative to trace the family linage as far back as possible so the remaining Zoccarato/Zuccherato in Brazil and around the world can be connected.

In the family tree, the ancestor farthest back is Sebastiano Zoccarato who was born circa 1770. Just by reaching the 1770s, it was possible to connect several of the families from San Giorgio delle Pertiche and Campodarsego. With a bit more research, the Zoccarato families from Santa Giustina in Colle will also be connected. We may also be able to connect the large Zuccherato family who emmigrated from Noale, Venezia to São Paulo.
