Suppa (48)

The most common pattern serving as a basis for fixed Italian surnames was one of paternity, the name of the father being the best reference for identification. Son surnames however, derived also from the names of places; others from offices and professions and others from personal characteristics of the progenitor. The surname Suppa, as suggested by the scholar Joseph G. Fucilla, can be placed among names derived from objects. In this case, the surname Suppa derives from the Italian word "zuppa", meaning "soup", in turn originating from the Gothic "suppa", meaning "a slice of soaked bread", or from the regional term "zuffa", meaning "polenta" or "cornmeal", derivingg in turn from the Lombard "supfa", meaning "broth". Most surnames deriving from objects can also be considered as having other origins, such as occupational, or local, or even nickname (nome d'ingiuria). In early times, it was quite common for a man to be referred to by a notable physical or moral characteristic or a personal capability. If we consider an occupational origin for Suppa, the original bearer of the surname may have been someone famous for his soups, perhaps the owner of an inn. Variants of the surname Suppa are Suppi, Suppo, Zuppi and Zupponi. The Dizionario Storico-Blasonico, a list of the Italian nobility, mentions the Suppa family and several of its members. In 1440 Coletta Suppa was one of the two rulers of the city of Reggio Calabria. in 1521 one Mariano was elected "Sindaco dei Nobili" and Carlo Suppa was one of the Founding Brothers (Fratelli Fondatori) of the Congregation of the Annunziata in 1536.
