The following forms have been found in various records, to-wit: Rod, Rode, Rods, Rodes, Road, Roads, Roades, Rhode, Rhod, Rhods, Rhodes, Rhoad, Rhoades, Rood, Roods, Rodez, de Rodez. Many of these forms result from lack of education on the part of record makers, others to corruptions made to meet the fancy of individuals. The original ancestors of all the various branches of the family spelled it Rod, Rods, Rode or Rodes. Many theories have been advanced to account for the origin of the name.
