The etymology of the Epithet Ringslinger: origins are likely to have been a corrupted form of "Slængeborræ" designating tribal affiliation with the [Silingi] (an East Germanic tribe, probably part of the larger Vandal group with origins in Silesia). The Silingi were part of the migratory movements of the Vandals, into the Iberian peninsula and later on to North Africa, which was one of the causes of the fall of the Western Roman Empire.

Slænganbøghe (Old East Norse) and slöngvanbaugi (Old West Norse) are both variants of the name Slængeborræ (meaning "from Slænge") which appears in Chronicon lethrense and the Annals of Lund. In the version of the sagas preservice by Saxo Grammaticus great liberty is taken with the name, with Saxo fabricating and elaborate and often contradictory story/myth to account for the namel which he renders Slyngebond meaning "bracelet slinger."
