With regard to the earliest origins...The Black Sea deluge theory dates the genesis of the Sea of Azov to 5600 BC, and there are traces of Neolithic settlement in the area now covered by it. In antiquity, it was known as Lake Mæotis (Latin Palus Maeotis (pronounced May-Osius) after the tribe of Maeotaen (pronounced Mayo-Tain) which inhabited "Terra Tainia" on the eastern shores of the Maeotian marshes. This red haired tribe has been documented as intermarrying with the Goths, Agathrysi, and Swyddian tribes that migrated north to populate Scandinavia.
The Sea of Azov was important in ancient times when Greek colonies were founded on its shores in the 6th century BC. The entrance to the sea was controlled by Tanais, who maintained a florishing city state at the mouth of the Don River in the 7th century BC. In the 3rd century CE these city-states became vassals of Rome. The ancient city-states on the Azov coast fell to the invading Huns in the 4th century. In the 13th–15th century the Genoese colony of Tana on the Sea of Azov still maintained some commercial importance. Almoustine 17:39, 24 February 2009 (EET)
