MacAlpin is the lineage designation for all direct descendants of Alpin MacEochaid (Dalriada) (b. estimated 780 d. 836). It should be used for direct descendants in the male line and for female descendants. This is a patronymic designation which is not carried to the children of the female descendants; Rather the children of the direct female descendants will bear the surnames of their fathers unless the father is unidentified or unknown.
