The Midwinter King.
Sire d'Joure was the title of the pagan passion play that was the main performance at the court during Michaelmas the term Sire d'Joure means literally (Father of the Day). As part of the play the Midwinter King was symbolically deposed in favor of his son, the new king. The Priestess validates the reign of the king by celebrating a symbolic marriage with the monarch whose reign is renewed. The Priestess in celebrating this marriage passes into a new life being transformed from Hag to Maiden.
In Arthur's court the ceremonies of the Pagan were celebrated often alongside the Christian as the court itself was in transition between the old and new customs. The King himself delegated Gawain as a surrogate for himself. The marriage was celebrated with the Priestess giving Gawain/the King a gift of choice ... "Chose whether you would have me be beautiful and faithless, or faithful and ugly." to which Gawain/the King would reply "I give to you your freedom, that you yourself may chose what you would be." The Priestess then replied..."Your choice is wise for I choose to be both beautiful and faithful."
