Lineage:Beaton
Unlike many Scottish clan names, the name Beaton clan was not originally derived from a patronymic designation. It was, rather, a title given to an individual (and later a clan sept) which indicated their skill in the healing arts and divination. Because these talents tended to be hereditary and children were tutored by their skilled parent in the arts they perpetuated along genealogical lines and became associated with the particular clan of Beaton.
Beatons are found not only in the British Isles and Ireland, but on the continent in France as well where it is likely they originated. It is almost certain that they were very old family related to the Picts, which predated the arrival of the Angles and Saxons. The name Maelbaedha or Macbeth is a name associated with the Beatons which literally translated from the Gaelic means "Son of Life". Almoustine 19:14, 15 June 2008 (EEST)
New evidence indicates that the Beaton family can trace their lineage to Vettius Agorius Praetextatus who was a Mithraic Zoroastrian Roman whose family name Vettius is related Vitaly (Latin, Vite = Life). Almoustine 18:20, 26 February 2009 (EET)
