THE AGATHYRSI

"The Agathyrsi are a race of men very luxurious, and very fond of wearing gold on their persons... In other respects their customs approach nearly to those of the Thracians" (Herodotus - Histories, IV.104).

The Agathyrsi, the first recorded inhabitants of Transylvania, were known for coloring their hair dark blue, and defining status and rank by tattooing their bodies. Aeneid claims that they were related to the Picts of Scotland, having migrated north west leaving their presence in Scandinavia where they were known as the Heathobards and Barsarkar. Valerius Flaccus (in Argonautica) calls them Thyrsagetae. According to German researcher Eichwald, the name Thyrsagetae can be translated to mean the Getae of the Tyras River. The name Agathyrsus means "The Enraged". Almoustine 07:51, 8 October 2008 (EEST)

Learn more about the Agathyrsi

The Agathyrsi can be identified as the Aghraethra a subclan of the Turanian people. The name Turan derives from the Avestan "Tau-Raodan", which means "Further on the River". Turanian language family into different sub-branches. The Northern or Ural-Altaic division branch compromised Tungusic, Mongolic, Turkic, Samoyedic, and Finnic. In post-Avestan traditions they were thought to inhabit the region north of the Oxus, the river separating them from the Iranians. Their presence accompanied by incessant wars with the Iranians, helped to define the latter as a distinct nation, proud of their land and ready to spill their blood in its defense. The common names of Turanians in Avesta and Shahnameh include Frarasyan (Frode) Aghraethra (Agathyr), Biderafsh,[22] Arjaspa (Arnegiscla) Namkhwast[24]. The names of Iranian tribes including those of the Turanians that appear in Avesta have been studied by Professor Mayrhofer in his comprehensive book on Avesta personal name etymologies: Iranisches Personennamenbuch, I: Die altiranischen Namen.
