Grossmutter was the youngest of 13 children, although it seems most of them died young. Father Georg provided meat for the garrison in Pyritz, while mother Anna supplemented the income by running a rather successful boarding house. They were struck very hard financially when the garrison left town, and they were forced to sell the house and live in a few rooms with the one daughter, Caroline.
