[edit] Place names in Rodovid.en : a new rule ?

Hi everybody

Rodovid.en has no rule for place names.

So there are a lot of ambiguous places written in records.

It's well known, in other Rodovid localizations that the simplest way to avoid places ambiguity is to use Wikipedia titles for each place name.

Unfortunately, it's impossible to use en.Wikipedia titles for "Place:" pages in Rodovid.EN, because of the comma between place name and disambiguation part. See for instance:

  • Place:Hartford

Hartford in Connecticut is written

  • "Hartford, Connecticut" in Wikipedia

But this disambiguation system cannot be used in Rodovid : trying to indicate a place name that way in a record ends with the software writing 2 different places:

  1. Hartford, which is ambiguous
  2. Connecticut

So, we propose a rule to write place names in Rodovid.EN:

  1. Use Wikipedia titles
  2. Use disambiguation rules commonly employed in other localizations of Wikipedia, in this case: Hartford (Connecticut)

NB: this convention has been used for the beginning of "red links hunt" in Rodovid.

[edit] Place names

Hello everybody.

I'm terribly sorry… I began to create "Place:" pages, with same protocol than in Rodovid.FR, but Baya had an idea about comma between places in the "Place field". So it could be possible to have the same rule than Wikipedia.EN.

Well, it's a big mess in Rodovid.FR but it could be usefull in Rodovid.EN.

I've no idea now about what is the best way to create those "Place:" pages. Could you try this new protocol?

Best regards. --Christophe Tesson - talk. 14:18, 26 August 2015 (EEST)

Place names I think you're onto something. As you can see in my contribs, I've been fixing references to Place:Georgia which mean Place:Georgia (U.S. state). -Justin (koavf)·T·C·M 01:55, 27 August 2015 (EEST)
Have you any preference?
We have to avoid
  • ambiguous places: ie: "Georgia", "Georgia (U.S. state)" or "Georgia, U.S. state", and "Georgia (country)"
  • Duplicates: ie: Kiev (Ukraine) or Kiev (U.S.S.R.) etc.
Further system was creating these two links with the notation "Kiev, U.S.S.R.
  1. Place:Kiev
  2. Place:U.S.S.R.
New system (in test phase) creates two different links:
  1. Place:Kiev, U.S.S.R
  2. Place:U.S.S.R.
IMHO : it's too much complex for new users! What do you think? --Christophe Tesson - talk. 12:19, 1 September 2015 (EEST)

I had returned old behaviour. So we can use Georgia (U.S. state) and Georgia (country). --Baya 19:06, 9 September 2015 (EEST)

[edit] Searching

HI everybody. I'm trying search and system return me "Rodovid EN search is disabled."--kloin 13:01, 27 January 2017 (EET)

Yes, it was already disabled when I became a member in 2013. The developper of Rodovid, Yaroslav "Baya" Boychuk, probably did it to diminish the load on the server (he financed the projet himself after its start).
So we use Google for searches, with some limitations : for example with Rodovid BR, Google lists the records created until September of last year. Dn Gov (d) 20:05, 27 January 2017 (EET)
I understand it. It would be nice if it was turned on. Never mind ... --kloin 11:11, 30 January 2017 (EET)

You can also ask Baya on his talk page : maybe the situation has changed since small advertisements were added in 2014. Dn Gov (d) 00:00, 31 January 2017 (EET)
