Many genealogies include Inger, naming him as a soldier in the Varangian Guard. However a careful study of the politics of the era shows that the Varangian guard was not established in Byzantium until 911 at the behest of Constantine Porphryogenitus. Although accounts as early as 839 and 842 mention raiding by the Norse, these are identified as the Rhos. The first Norse attack on Contantinople occurred in 860 under Askold and Dir.

These two Askold and Dir are likely a reference to the two main branches of the Kubratids (Ashina and Dulo)
