Notes

Youngest in family of 9

The youngest of 9 children. Worked for the Bank of England for a year before coming to South Africa. He had a good education, but left school at 16 because of financial constraints. He could read French, English and Latin. He eventually could speak 7 languages. Ella, Bob and Joan all confirmed this. He had the greatest German accent when he spoke English. He wanted to go to Oxford -- Cecil Rhodes tried to persuade him to give up trading. His brother Heinrich (called Uncle Henry) persuaded him to come to Tabase where he was trading. So Robert decided to come to try to earn enough money to go to Oxford, but he never got there. After joining Henry in Tabase, he went to the gold fields of Johannesburg and is said to have done some transport riding to Loreno Marques. This game him enough money to start trading on his own account from the back of a waggon to begin with. Then he and his brother decided to go to Springvale which was on the main road from Cape Town. Then Friedrich came out and joined them. They built a hotel. Friedrich ran the hotel, and Mathilda came out to join him. Nobody knows what became of her when he died.
