Notes

In the genealogy of David, there are approximately 5 missing generations between David and Amindadav al Hur (according to the Bible). This has resulted in a quandary which has puzzled genealogists for more than two thousand years and led to countless wars and revolutions in the region which continue to this day. What became of the missing generations is an extraordinary mystery. The Hebrew (aka record of Judah) as preserved in the Bible was written by the descendants of Judah who under David were active in territorial disputes with the nearby Philistines, and as such will be naturally skewed to their version of the historical events. It is interesting to note that even the Bible includes ancestors of David who are questionable at least and "part of the enemy camp" at best. Among his ancestors are Hurrites, Moabites, Philistines, and Egyptians...leading one to question whether it is by virtue of his familial connections, and not merely his military exploits, that Israel and Judah were united under his crown. Were David's ancestors deliberately, and carefully, excluded in order to put a more Hebrew face on the king...providing just enough information to establish legitimate claim to the area without revealing the depth of his familial and political connections to the traditional enemies of the "Jews"?

There is no doubt that the accurate genealogy of this king were preserved in the libraries of the Ancient world, The library of Assurbanipal, Alexandria, and the Serapheum. But were likely at this time to have been written on parchment or vellum scrolls and would have not survived the conflagration of these amazing repositories. A careful study of the histories of the surrounding cultures and their archaeological remains is the best hope of being able to salvage and piece together the shattered bits and pieces of David's history. I doubt we will ever be able to accurately reconstruct the ancestry of David in its entirety but doing so may help to finally lay to rest some of the conflict which threatens daily to consume the inhabitants of the lands he once possessed.

Connections to the House of Araunah

Araunah (referred to as Ornan by the Book of Chronicles) is described by the Books of Samuel as having sold his threshing floor to King David, which David then constructed an altar on, the implication being that the altar became the core of the Temple of Solomon. Araunah means the lord in Hittite, and so most scholars, since they consider the Jebusites to have been Hittite, have argued that Araunah may have been the original king of Jerusalem at the time of David. Further the name of Adonijah appearing as a name among the sons of David lead some scholars to believe there was a dynastic connection, supposing that Melchizedek (Malik-Zadek) was a priest king associated with an earlier Jebusite/Hittite sanctuary and scholars suspect that the Temple of Solomon was simply a natural evolution of this sanctuary.
